A Mainboard :

Mainboards come in many shapes/sizes for two different types of cases. AT and ATX. Make sure you order the correct case for the type of mainboard you order or vice-versa. Also, be sure that you know ahead of time if you will need Socket 370, Slot 1, Socket A or Slot A and the new P4 Socket. This is because different processors fit in different motherboards.

  • Intel Pentium 3 and Celeron processors that resemble a game cartridge fit in a Slot 1 mainboard.
  • Intel Pentium 3 and Celeron processors that resemble a small square wafer fit in a Socket 370 mainboard.
  • AMD Athlon processors that also resemble a game cartridge fit in a Slot A mainboard.
  • AMD Athlon processors that resemble a small square wafer fit in a Socket A mainboard.
  • Intel Pentium 4 processors have their own exclusive socket.

You must also plan ahead for the memory type that each mainboard supports. Most current mainboards support PC133 & PC100 DIMM memory and some of the newer mainboards support DDR memory in variants of 1600 or 2100.
